Maureen Daly Partner Reddy Charlton LLP

Maureen is a partner and the head of our intellectual property, data protection and AI department. She specialises in all areas of intellectual property law including portfolio management, clearance, registration, enforcement and strategic protection of IP rights. Her work spans trade mark filings and prosecutions, IP due diligence and the commercialisation of IP through licences, assignments, franchising, sponsorship, R&D collaborations and confidentiality agreements. She also advises clients in complex IP disputes and regularly represents them before the Irish Courts.

Maureen also has significant expertise in artificial intelligence, including compliance with the EU AI Act, issues relating to text and data mining, AI‑related copyright infringement and ownership.

Maureen has extensive data protection experience which includes advising on GDPR compliance, access requests, international data transfers, regulatory complaints and appeals, freedom of information matters and data breach management.

Maureen is recognised by renowned international directories including Chambers and Legal 500 for her work. She lectures widely in Ireland and internationally on IP, data protection and AI and is the author of numerous publications in these fields. She holds an Honours Degree in Biochemistry (University College Dublin), a Master’s in Copyright Law (King’s College London) and is also a qualified Irish and European Trade Mark Attorney as well as a UPC representative.

Some of Maureen's recent work highlights include:
  • Advised a global beverage company in respect of the management of its IP portfolio in Ireland to including clearing and registering brands;
  • Advised a renowned luxury fashion house in respect of a trade mark infringement and passing off dispute in Ireland;
  • Advised a manufacturer of generic medicines in relation to an allegation of patent infringement by a multinational pharmaceutical company;
  • Advised a non-profit organisation in the arts industry in respect of its data protection policies and procedures as well as advised on the international transfer of personal data;
  • Advised a state agency on all legal issues including advised on appeals to the Office of the Information Commissioner which included drafting comprehensive submissions;
  • Advised a state-sponsored organisation on compliance with data protection and freedom of information law which included amending data sharing and data processing agreements to comply with the GDPR as well as advised on data access requests;
  • Advised a national professional representative and educational body on all IP, data protection and AI related issues including advised on the legal risks of using AI tools, drafted an AI policy, advised on IP clauses in contracts and advised on ongoing compliance with the GDPR as well as updated its data protection policies; and
  • Advised a company on the legal implications and risks of using certain generative AI tools to record and minute board meetings as well as provided practical guidance on risk mitigation and governance safeguards
